  • First performance: June 1 2024
  • Venue: Main Stage
  • Duration: 1 h

World premiere of the bestselling book by British author Sam Copeland about a boy who, under the influence of stress, fear or anxiety, turns into various animals. Reasons for such emotions will always be found, so he tries with his school friends to find ways to control this affliction. The novel is full of humour, but also allows readers to discover useful tools for dealing with their own emotions. It premieres as part of a season under the theme #tenderness, but already heralds the 2024/2025 season under the theme #boys, during which we will explore what it’s like to be a boy in modern times.

Sam Copeland is a British writer and literary agent who writes about himself as follows: “currently lives in London with three stinky cats, three stinky children and one quite pleasant-smelling wife. He works as a chicken whisperer, travelling the world and using his unique talent for taming wild chickens’. His Charlie book series is published in Polish by Media Rodzina.

Reviews

The main staging idea of the creators was to use the motif of theatre within theatre - hence the Author (Jakub Ehrlich) and the Stage Manager (Wioleta Karpowicz) also appear on stage. The first scene is like a reversal or, better said, a reflection - we are the audience watching the back of the stage from behind, while the spectators are somewhere further in front of us, behind the stage and the actors on the other side. The metatheatricality in "Charlie..." is multilayered, as we also have rehearsals for the school play and its finale, as well as the breaking of the fourth wall and the actors entering the audience (one scene is even played out on the balcony).
